The British Heart Foundation is receiving press coverage because of apparent advice to perform chest compressions without mouth to mouth ventilations. The Resuscitation Council has already stated that chest compressions alone are better than nothing but 30 compressions to 2 breaths is the preferred resuscitation procedure. We are approved by Health and Safety Executive to deliver first aid training and we will continue to teach in line with the Resuscitation Council guidelines, one of the conditions of our approval. On a personal note, I would always rather deliver the best possible treatment to any casualty and therefore carry a resuscitation face shield to protect myself in case of an emergency. We continue to provide the three day First Aid at Work (FAW) course, the two day Re-qualification course, the one day Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW) and the half day HSE recommended, non certificated Refresher courses. Student feed back is very positive. You can attend the FAW Requalification course even if your original FAW course was undertaken with another organisation. Employers are still required to carry out a first aid needs assessment to decide the number and level of training needed for First Aiders in their organisation.
