The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has carried out an evaluation of first aid in the workplace. Their findings led to new recommendations that have been implemented from Thursday 1st October 2009. The First Aid at Work course now takes only three days to complete and has more practical, less theory and no multiple choice test. There is also a new qualification of Emergency First Aider in the Workplace (EFAW) that requires a one day training course. The FAW Requalification remains unchanged at two days. In addition HSE recommends annual three hour refresher courses are undertaken for both these qualifications to maintain skills and learn of any changes in first aid procedures. We will continue to provide our one day Basic Emergency courses, suitable for appointed persons and anyone wanting to learn more general first aid, especially school staff. These will continue to be tailored to the needs of the specific workplace. This course will not qualify the employee as an HSE approved First Aider The EFAW courses at our Mayflower Training base will have an additional, optional question and answer session at the conclusion of the course for those with queries about conditions or accidents that are not within the HSE defined statutory syllabus. Employers are required to carry out a first aid needs assessment to decide the number and level of training needed for First Aiders in their organisation.
